02. Don't we all? She's fucking awesome, dude!

10. FOR SERIOUS! And not only does creating original characters defeat the purpose of appreciating the show's existing content, but it restricts the creativity of the person creating original characters. I was working for a long time on a Gundam fanfiction using all original characters, and was struggling to make it interesting while keeping it in line with what's considered "proper Gundam." That is, until I realized there was no point in calling it a Gundam fanfiction when only the robots were remaining intact, and I scrapped all the Gundam trappings and made it an original story. Doesn't even take place in space anymore.

Now the creativity's coming in waves, and I feel like I'm making real progress for the first time in years. :D

11. I THINK I NEED TO START WATCHING MONK. FELLOW OCD SUFFERER HERE IN NEED OF A LITTLE BOOST. 8D;;

18. YOU. ARE. AWESOME. FOR SERIOUS, FUCKING HIGH FIVE.

37. He has a point. Most of my favored pairings are het and yuri, and I've had yaoi fans well outside of F!S call me (among other nasty things) a freak for not accepting and worshipping their yaoi pairings. I think the people on here calling #37 a homophobe really need to back off, because all you're really doing is proving him/her right, pretty much. Het fans like #37 and myself do feel rather browbeaten in certain fandoms because the yaoi fans do get extremely overzealous and (dare I say) even outright heterophobic at times. Discrimination within fandoms is a two-way street, and lately it seems like one lane's been given an unrestricted green light.

45. I feel bad because Heath Ledger;s Joker was originally the main reason I wanted to see the movie (even before he died). But after seeing Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent in the trailers, I've almost forgotten about the Joker and am EAGERLY AWAITING his Two-Face. Sorry Heath. :(

69. I'll agree with you as far as the new movies' portrayal seems much more grounded and realistic, but I still maintain that TV Shinji was a little too neurotic to be taken seriously.

72. ... This IS a troll, right?

79. Could be worse. You could be furry for Cairne.

I would agree with you, if that's what the secret was expressing. But since when has F!S = the internet?

I said they had a point, not that they were absolutely, 100% correct to the letter. The secret's too narrow in that it only focuses on F!S, but so much of the language in the secret can AND DOES speak just as much (moreso even) for the internat as a whole.

I couldn't care less about F!S, but this is something of an issue in fandoms in general, and I felt this secret was a good place to expand from in addressing that larger issue. That's all.

I like everything, most of all gen fic, which seems to ...not exist in large numbers. XD It depends on the fandom you're in. Some are dominated by het, some are dominated by slash. But het is and always will be represented in canon. Unless you're in Queer as Folk fandom, you're less likely to experience canon slash ...hence why fandom is the natural outlet.

I've only ever seen femslash universally outcasted. But rarely do I see femslash fans calling phobia. :\

I'll give you that het tends to be the default for canon, and I can see where that may get frustrating at times for slash fans. However, I still don't think that justifies some of the vicious backlash or severely cold reception I've seen against het fans just because they happen to like that sort of thing.

Just because I like the canon het (or, hell, even the crack het) doesn't mean I should be afraid to say so. And in so many fandoms, the general attitude is that you should be afraid, because it either results in firm ostracism or being directly run out of the fandom on a rail.

All I want to see is all gender preferences (het, slash, and femslash) being allowed to express themselves freely within fandoms without having to take a shot across the bow from one or the other because "that fandom is SLASH'S territory" or "that fandom is HET'S territory." And I don't think it's an unreasonable request, but thus far I seem to be in the minority on that.

I can see where that may get frustrating at times for slash fans.

I was mostly referencing that as a possible reason for why slash has the popularity it does, but it can be frustrating, yes.

I don't condone backlash against either het or slash fans. Both exist and both are not good things. In some fandoms, het can get you odd looks. In others, it's slash. But I've never been afraid to express a like for het in Death Note fandom, for example, which is quite possibly the slashiest fandom I've seen lately. I haven't ever felt afraid to like het in any fandom, but that just may be the fandoms I've experienced. I can't say fandom has ever made me afraid in general. What fandoms have you afraid of getting run out? D:

I love het. It should be okay to say so. But I don't think blaming the popularity of slash is the way to go about supporting het. Just as I don't believe disparaging het is the way to go about supporting slash. There is, as the OP suggests, a lot of belief that people who like slash DON'T like het and that the only reason people slash is because male on male action is pretty. That's not always true. Some of us dig everything.

I'm not sure what in my comment made you think I felt the opposite of that statement. D: But I agree.

But, it's not that OCs restrict creativity or defeat the purpose in themselves (though in the case you mention, definitely, and congrats on getting your story rolling :D), because there are definitely cases where you just plain need an OC or two for the plot.

As long as the focus stays on the canon characters, and the OCs fit the setting and serve a purpose in the plot, I think they're okay and sometimes awesome.

Sounds like you weren't writing fanfiction. There's a distinction between an original story and a fanfiction with an OC-cast -- a fine distinction, but still a good one. If you can change around a couple of things and have an original story, you're writing original fiction with window dressings. If you have all OCs, but changing anything about the canon details immediately ruins the story/plot/entire point (or makes it look incredibly stupid)? I'd consider that fanfiction. After all, it can't exist outside of its fandom. Plenty of examples like this exist in universes like LoTR or Star Wars, where calling your jedis "druid warriors" and the midichlorians "magic syphilis" just ain't gonna cut it if the story really is fanfiction.

That being said, I think OCs in a fandom universe limit creativity just as much as writing canon characters limits creativity. You got your established rules, you gotta work in them. The only difference is practically nobody reads the former.

You're completely right. The thing is, what's annoying most people is that the OP isn't complaining because people are bashing him/her for liking het pairings. They're saying that there's too much slash around and the het pairings aren't getting enough attention, and that angers them, and all the slash fans on F!S frighten them.

I think slash fans who go "OMG YOU LIKE HET GTFO" are as retarded as the het fans who go "OMG YOU LIKE SLASH UR SICK." But someone getting so worked up over the fact that slash is popular, not that they're actually being beaten down by psycho fanbrats, is being ridiculous.

Of course, that said, some of the slash fans on F!S scare me too...

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, there are a few fandoms (like one I just got in) where I thought a het ship was so cute and obvious, and come to find, no, there's not a spec of fic or fandom for the pairing, but the slash one involving the guy is totally popular.
It's a bit disheartening.

But it's not, y'know, THERE'S TOO MUCH SLASH WAH! so much as it's THERE'S NOT ENOUGH HET!

Of course, the solution is to make your own. As I intend to. But it would be nice, y'know, to find that in a fandom that's been around for almost nine years, at least somebody else had like the same pairing...

Re: 37

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that kind of situation can be really... odd. And especially if the het couple is canon, cos you think there'd at least be... well, SOMETHING for it. But then, I personally would be unlikely to explore it, not because it's het, but because... the more "canon" or HUGE AND POPULAR a pairing is, even if I support it like whoa, I tend not to seek out anything in fandom for it. XD; I don't know why, it just- I can get it in canon, I want to explore in fanon. SOMETHING LIKE THAT, I'M ODD.

But yes, het not existing at all in a fandom is... odd, and it'd be easy to go "OMG GUYS LESS SLASH" with that, but it's really the "HEY GUYS, A LITTLE MORE HET/A LITTLE MORE OF THIS PAIRING" that's more accurate, I agree.

And making your own is the best solution, but then, it'd also be kind of sad to be the only one writing a pairing, and wanting to read it, and having no one's work but your own. That sort of thing is depressing.
