One of the heroes had to get a demon-killing knife away from a demon of their acquaintance. He and the demon aren't big fans of each other. He provoked her into beating him up by using some salty, sexist language (he called her "our slutty little Yoda") and punching her in the face. The beating commenced (she's a super-strong demon, after all), and he managed to swipe the knife off of her person.

Cue fandom flipping out over the insult he used to provoke her. ("He thinks all women are sluts!" "As an adjective, slutty doesn't even accurately describe her!" "He's a slut, too!" "We're glad he died horribly and went to Hell, the misogynistic horsefucker!")

Now, there's a good case to be made for an increase in the use of gendered insults this year. We had three major female antagonists (one human, two demons), whereas in the past, the Big Bad was male. The term used back then was "son of a bitch" rather than "bitch", so fandom didn't really care. But because our villains are female this year, and because the FCC doesn't allow for the saltier non-gendered insults that the characters would be more likely to use, we get stuck with "slut", "skank" and "bitch". Fandom in general doesn't see it that way, though... they're pretty sure the showrunners and the characters hate all women.

It's good times. Except, not.

And by "a good case", I don't mean "a good case can be made to justify the insults." I mean that the people freaking out have a good case when they say this stuff has increased. And frankly, it should be done away with. But it's not unique to the show, and it's something that's somewhat forced on the show by media standards and practices, which won't allow them to use stronger language, or more anti-male language.

There was an uproar that Dean is a misogynistic character and people want to write letters to Eric Kripke telling him to stop making Dean call females bitches/skanks/sluts/etc... even though Dean doesn't hand out insults unless someone deserves it. People are saying stuff like Dean is hateful to women because of his treatment of Ruby (who is NOT a woman, she's a demon!) and Bela (who Dean was perfectly fine with until she tried to get them both killed repeatedly). It's all very long and drawn-out. It sounds to me like they want Kripke to change the show to better suit their tastes, which is no better than people protesting the addition of Ruby, Bela, Jo, Ellen, or any recurring character that's not Sam and Dean to begin with.

But anyway! I stayed out of the wank, just watched it all unfold and felt mighty sorry for Kripke.
