(Some of my favourite books, read and re-read between the age of 10 and 24, now :) )

Diana Wynne Jones. Tad Williams' War of the Flowers.

I also love the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, and that's for even younger kids. :D (The audio books are great, I love the narrator's accent.)

Monica Furlong's Wise Child
Maj Bylock (if there are any English translations available)
Tonke Dragt (the same)
Margaret Mahy's The Changeover
Patricia Wrightson's Wirrun trilogy
Otfried Preußler's The Satanic Mill

Maybe Elyne Mitchell, if animal stories are of any interest (it's been a while since I read some of her books, but back then I loved them)
Marion Zimmer Bradley's Lythande and other short stories (I disliked many of her other books for dragginess, especially Mists of Avalon, but I enjoyed some of her short stories and some of the darkover stories)
... I shall stop now.

There is absolutely nothing childish whatsoever about Tad William's War of the Flowers (but it is one of my favourite books of all time).

Not saying there's anything wrong with childish books. Me, I'm catching up on the Dianne Wynne Jones books I didn't read as a child.
