Re: 25
(Anonymous) 2008-05-23 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)IMO you should use the word the characters would use themselves. I'm in Supernatural fandom right now, and reading Sam or Dean thinking the word 'arse' is jarring. In the same way that if I was reading Harry Potter fic, seeing Harry thinking 'ass' would throw me out of the story. If the OP is in a British fandom, the should just suck it up and deal with the fact they are mostly going to be reading in a British dialect.
Although I'll admit, this is slightly easier for me than it is for a lot of people, 'cause I come from southern England, where 'grass' rhymes with 'arse'. And I've gotten in the habit of reading the word 'ass' with the same pronunciation as 'arse' anyway. But really, if British people can deal with Americanisms being all over most of the media we consume, Americans can deal with people using accurate dialect words in fanfiction of British media. I've been in my American fandom so long I've started thinking 'pants' when I mean 'trousers', and I don't post whiny secrets about it.
On a less serious note:
I HAS A VOWLES! :D
...
NOES! THEY BE EATIN MY VOWELS! D:
Re: 25
I am upset at the former anon's attitude about it. They basically implied a very strong UR DOIN IT RONG AMERIKA attitude. That attitude bothers me, because there is no one dialect of English that's doing it more "right" or "wrong" than the others, language doesn't work that way. I can deal with British English just fine, in fact sometimes I prefer it, but what I can NOT deal with is the notion that American English is inferior and less "right."
Also, the OP claimed in other replies to also be some sort of British, so the argument of "we Brits can handle your Americanisms, so you Americans should be able to handle some Britishisms" doesn't really apply.
Which is really odd of the OP, but whatever.
Re: 25
(Anonymous) 2008-05-23 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)And I really shouldn't have said something so generalisation-y, I know most Americans in British fandoms actually try to get their writing right in terms of dialect, and there are probably at least as many British people who complain about Americanisms as there are Americans who complain about Britishisms (looking at it proportionally and only taking into account Americans who are regularly exposed to British-English and Brits who are regularly exposed to American-English). I was just having a lame moment there. xP
