[David Tennant in Broadchurch]

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
To each their own

I've never really understood people disliking his performance as the Doctor, though

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I really really enjoyed his performance, however I really disliked the character towards the end.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
sure, I get the criticisms of the character, but OP's secret was specifically about his acting, which I still mostly liked even towards the end

It did get a bit bathetic but it'd be hard not to with the writing towards the end there

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really a criticism to say that you think someone does a better X than Y? It doesn't necessarily state that Y is badly done, just that someone prefers X.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
that's true. I think it feels like they don't like his performance as 10 because of the way that it's phrased (particularly, saying it's "far better" and also describing 10 as "quirky" could be read as at least a little dismissive) but it's definitely possible I'm misreading the secret.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
All the Doctors are quirky, though? I see that more as a descriptor (and not even a negative one, necessarily) of the role, not Tennant's individual performance.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to draw the line between the way Ten is written and the way he's performed. For people who don't like Ten, David's performance is the most visible aspect, so they focus on that. It's easy to forget that he's just working with what he was given.

The performance is a victim of the writing.

OP never said they dislike him as the Doctor though, only that they prefer him as a detective.

He was acting well as the Doctor, but he was just too human for me. I don't dislike him, but he is my least favorite of the Modern Who doctors. I prefer the Doctor to be a bit more alien. And plus, the wangst towards the end of his run got old really fast.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the Ten hatred was also backlash. He was super popular and people got really bitter about it really quickly.

Like I'm not saying there aren't legitimate reasons to dislike either Ten or his performance, of course there are and everyone is allowed their opinion. It's just that the hatred got a little over the top at times.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because he was RTD's ode to how great he was as a writer and his shit got old, fast. ESPECIALLY the whole Twu Wub thing with Rose.

I gotta say I agree. I love Ten, and he is one of my favourite Doctors. But I -really- love David Tennant's more serious roles.

But either way, we can agree DT is awesome, right?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
This is a bad secret and you should feel bad. >:(

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Er, what now? Why should OP feel bad?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
i find their opinion offensive i guess?

also that's a sort of catch phrase "that's a bad ___ and you should feel bad"

so i'm being a bit hyperbolic. but i really, really, really, really, really don't see it.

they prefer as grumpy sour detective over the upbeat and lively dr who? ew. i find that disgusting. there's so many "dark" roles out there, and that're all SO MUCH BETTER than upbeat stuff, right????!

BULLSHIT. And especially BULLSHIT for this actor. Yes he can do multiple things. But dark shit ain't better mr edgy.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
If you honestly can tie the word "disgusting" to preferences in TV roles, you need to take a good hard look at yourself.
It's nothing to do with "dark shit" or "edgy" at all, so drop that strawman as well.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Upbeat and lively.

That's why he had the whole dramatic, angsty time once Rose was gone.

Go rewatch, he wasn't that upbeat.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think we understand it's a catchphrase, it just seems inappropriate here because "I prefer this rather than that" is hardly an "offensive" statement. It's so laughably mild that only the most fragile of delicate snowflakes would display the amount of hilarious butthurt you're currently displaying. Until this comment, I'd assumed you were attempting a joking response that fell sort of flat.

Also, nobody anywhere in this thread claimed that "dark shit" was inherently better "upbeat stuff". OP expressed a personal preference, to which they are entitled, just as you are entitled to your own personal opinion. When you respond to someone's innocuous statement about stuff they like with a weirdly aggressive counterpoint to an argument nobody here has actually made, you sound unhinged.

In the event this isn't a troll, please consider switching to decaf and taking a step back from fandom. You're one of those Doctor Who fans that make all Doctor Who fans look crazy.

I think you're overreacting by a large margin here. And Ten was in no way 'upbeat and lively'; he spent most of his run talking about how he was the loneliest person in the universe. The Broadchurch character is a lot more well adjusted, really.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, how dare OP prefer an actor's performance in a specific role. Like they have personal taste or something.

OP, you should be ashamed of yourself. HDU. 20 lashes. 3 hail mary's. I dunno, whatever else self-flagellating people do.

I like him in both and never really even thought to compare the two. Broadchurch is probably written a bit tighter then Who is though.

I dislike Ten and Tennant's performance a lot, but I really enjoy him in other roles. He was amazing in Richard II. (Not Scottish though!)
