So I was watching Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 tonight and the second one reminded me of something I keep forgetting, that might blow the minds of anyone who doesn't already know:

The actress who played Private Vasquez in Aliens is the same actress who played John Connors foster mother Janelle in Terminator 2, and Officer Shapiro in Lethal Weapon 2.

One of the most badass Hispanic heroines is actually a white Jewish girl in... I dunno what "face" its called when someone is darkening their skin to play a Hispanic person. Still Jenette Goldstein, hella badass, hella white. D'I blow any minds?

It is called getting a suntan. Hispanic is still white. Jewish is white. White woman playing white women is not anything.

Is Hispanic considered white in america? I always thought you guys drew some kinda line under that?

I get the impression that there's one particular anon who's just extremely committed to that viewpoint. Been seeing it a lot lately.

The thing with Hispanics in America is that it's kind of a separate category from white versus POC. There are some POC Hispanics and some white Hispanics. It's actually a separate question from ethnicity on the census - there's one question asking what ethnicity you are, and another asking whether or not you're Hispanic. So it's complex.

Hispanic is white. It is just some mixed race parentage Native Americans and mixed race parentage black people have appropriated the label. Hispanic is for those who are from, either directly or ancestrally, Spain or Portugal (same as Latin, which actually includes some non-Roma gypsies and some French) and those guys are white. They are Southern European whites. That is it.

The mixed race parentage Native Americans and mixed race parentage black people just have too much internal racism to admit that, because in the ridiculous racism pecking order the status lift they get from being associated with Southern European Whites makes them feel superior to Native Americans (especially Central and Caribbean natives) and black people.

Not that it troubles me any, I only really care that the actor does a good job - I regularly argue in favour of live action Want - and Vasquez was played to perfection. It just always blows my mind when I remember it.

I don't necessarily disagree with your comment but I think all of those things are more nuanced than you're presenting them here, and straight-up saying that Hispanic always equals white is just actually wrong.

So are black people just really really tan white people?

No and yes. Being from latin america is a bit complex because you are not defined by a single racial identity or facial features. Latin Americans are just a really diverse group of people who sometimes happen to share similarities in culture, experiences and sometimes language (not everyone speaks Spanish).

Unless you're talking about Hispanic from Spain, I have no horse in that race then.

Its worth very little to me, I only care that she did a brilliant job with it, but I will be interested to see if that makes any difference to anyone. Johnny Depp wasn't native american enough to get away with tonto, so... Let's wait and see.

Ha. Just went to check this story out and came upon a quote of her talking about how long the make up took because she had such persistent freckles everywhere, and that they gave her dark contacts to cover up the blue eyes. Kind of impressive that so few people know about this.

I'm torn. On the one hand she was the perfect choice for the roll, on the other it is pretty sketchy to cast a white actor for a non-white roll. I mean, why didn't they just change her name/character to a white woman instead of being dead set on her being Latina?

You know what? I tell you the truth: I have never been cast, or given the opportunity to audition for a short, freckle-faced Jewish girl who is half-Russian and half-Moroccan and Brazilian. So, I don't think I would work very much if that's all I was able to read for."

Nice. I didn't come upon that one in my quick search. She seems like she's as awesome and badass as her character, which is pretty cool.

Well, I mean, there are light-skinned Hispanic people. Just take a look at any telenovela. I don't think there's any particular term for someone getting a tan to play a Hispanic person, though I could be wrong. I suppose this could be an issue of representation, but I haven't seen any of those movies, so I don't know for sure.

As I understand it they later cast a Hispanic girl as a full blooded Semitic Jew on the worlds most popular tv show about military assassins. So it all evens out.
