Older fans CAN be annoying and set in their ways (and unwelcoming of newcomers for whatever reason) but on the flip side some of the nicest fans I ever fanned with were older, and I appreciate them so much. I learned a lot from them, about fandom and life, and I found them some of the nicest people I ever me online. It really depends on who you're interacting with (as well as the general atmosphere of the fandom; if it's inclined towards nastiness many nice fans may have already been driven away or left to go somewhere more fun).
