I, too, detest characters that start out great and then get stupid because the author is pushing a particular 'ship or trope. It happens *all the time* on tv/in movies, and i despise it.

I'm familiar with this series and tbh, I don't think the author writes female characters very well. Amelia is great and the whole unreliable narrator approach is well done, but it seems as though almost every other major female character comes down with a case of the stupids if the plot needs them to. It's not just Nefret, they frequently act in really annoying, irrational ways even if they're supposedly intelligent and reasonable.

I just want to say that I saw this author at one of her (relatively rare at that point in her life, because she was getting up there) public appearances and the Q&A kind of got taken over by people from an online newsgroup making a fuss about this very plot point -- all of which makes me instinctively defensive of Nefret. (Also she didn't really do anything wrong...???)

I was more disappointed that the series didn't know what to do with her after she and Ramses finally got together, esp after they had kids, so I sort of pretend it ended after their honeymoon.
