Aren't the handmaidens just a conceit of the mass infertility? So its just an excuse to round up all the fertile women and make them breeding slaves that they justify with a random part o the bible.

I think what the OP is suggesting is that they could have at least included forced marriages between men and the remaining fertile women rather than allowing them to remain with their barren wives. If all other values are subordinate to reproduction, then you'd think the barren women would be the first ones sent off to the colonies.

We don't even know if the wives are barren, it's just assumed it's the wives because patriarchy but it's strongly implied many of the men are barren too. But if they married the men to fertile women and there was still no conception that's harder to explain away as the womens fault.
