University bureaucracy, incomplete courses, and flunking

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Two semesters ago, I ended up taking incomplete grades in three of my classes, and I don't think I'll finish them in time to avoid them being changed to Fs. I had (and have) legit reasons, or I wouldn't have been granted so many in the first place, but the last time I talked to an advisor (in January) I told them I thought I'd be able to finish my work. Shortly after that, my life went to hell again, and didn't stabilize until the beginning of March.

Then I got a new job, my schedule changed, and suddenly I had no free time. I know at least one of my professors is pissed I never contacted her about anything. The truth is I'm anxious and ashamed and while I'm pretty sure I'll finish at least one pile of coursework tonight, I doubt I'll get to them all. Is there still a chance I could retroactively drop the courses? I still have all the required credits to graduate, especially if I finish the coursework I'm on track to finish tonight.

And yes, I know I'll only get real answers if I contact my professors and advisors and maybe the registrar's office. I'm just currently too anxious to do that, and I'm hoping someone has dealt with something similar and had it come out not horribly.

It really does depend on the profs/advisors/office but don't hesitate! Contact them sooner rather then later, your anxiety is not going to improve while you put it off.

I can't say for sure how it'll turn out but I know if you're dealing with nice enough people sometimes rules can be bent. But even if they can't, it'll be okay. You can still figure out a graduate, and flunking grades really don't mean anything once you're out of school.

I wish I had seen this yesterday when there was a better chance you would check and find my reply.

I just wanted to say that I've retroactively withdrawn from courses before. It can be done at at least some schools as long as you can get a medical professional to vouch for you having anxiety that made it difficult for you to withdraw when you were supposed to.
