Clearly you missed out on the dictate from on high a few years back that if you weren't a POC then you had better have a POC-pic for your story or better yet, not write the character at all because you would be appropriating the opportunity for a real POC to be heard in fandom circles. Or something. It was all rather hilarious given the number of women writing gay male characters. Although there were people who also advocated the only characters a writer shoukd write were from their own ethno sexual eco etc background.

It was a load of bollocks, of course, but I witnessed a disheartening number of otherwise sensible people take this as a reasonable position. Or, they were too insecure to buck louder and more strident voices.

Some of them quit writing. Others decided it was safer to color inside the lines, as it were. It was all a bit sad, really.

No doubt many of those people are still coloring within proscribed lines, if they're still active in fandom. Because fandom is full of easily cowed and neurotic people seeking approval.
