One thing I liked in the last Hobbit movie was when the villagers from Laketown are ready to make a last stand with their farm implements or whatever, it's a co-ed group - out of necessity, I'm sure, rather than the way they'd always expect to fight, but it makes sense in that situation so it was nice to see.

The one thing that really bugged me with Tolkein and women were the lengthy family trees and "so-and-so begat so-and-so" info-dumps that list all these paternal lines of descent but include few women. Here's all these dudes that don't have their own stories, but it's still important we know their names but we don't need to hear the names of any of the mothers?
