In my experience, the factor most likely to attract a large fanbase is just...a regular volume of content. If you post a ficlet every week or two, or sketches every day, or whatever, even if it isn't the Best Thing out there, if it's stuff people at least like, they'll hang around for the regular fix. Drawing popular/kinky shit widens the pool of potential fans, but it's having new stuff most of the time that really draws them in, baring a particular thing going suddenly viral.
