Not only is there no landmass, but there was a time in the 1800s when some people in believed the sea ice only existed around the edges of the arctic and in the interior was an open polar sea. (They mainly were just desperate to believe there could be a quicker sea route between Europe and Asia, although now with global warming all their dreams should come true.)
