What are your local movie theaters like?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-07 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of seating? Prices? Screens? Comfort?

My favorite topic of discussion!

We have four - two AMCs (formerly Carmikes) - they just changed the name and apparently put in new food in the first-run Carmike. I haven't been since Feb so I can't confirm.

The other one is one inside the mall, and apparently the only thing that changed is the ticket stubs are longer. Big deal.

Regal is the one I prefer to go to - I have their reward card and like stacking up points. It's not comfortable seating, but it has the better preshows.

Go a little further and you get to The Grand - it's really nice, has IMAX, 3D, and DBOX (which is surprisingly fun if you feel like splurging 20$ for a ticket). I love walking around and taking pictures of posters and standees, and taking free tiny movie posters.

I think my favorite theater i've been to so far was the AMC at Disney Springs ( formerly Downtown Disney) - it has BALCONY seating! Also, there's a BEAUTIFUL AMC that's EGYPTIAN THEMED in like...Pennsylvania.

Stadium seating. Too damn pricey, but that's pretty much a given. Ordinary screens. Comfort is okay.

There's this one theatre about a couple of hours away, with leather seats that electronically recline, and there is plenty of arm room with the cup holders. I gladly pay more if I'm the area (shopping).

The local one is a shit hole. Last time I went (3 years ago, the AC didn't work).

The one we see movies at is awesome. They have reserved seating with recliners that have warming seats. Depending on which theater room, you can get food served to your seat. Or you can go to the diner and just bring your food in when you eat (all seats have little tables that come out).

Prices range from $12 to $22.

I've got Landmark, which I enjoy the seats, but it's in a mall so it's not always fun to get to. AMC theater is good and well.

UA Galaxy is the closest to me, but they have the seats that are leather and reclining and you have to decide your seat when you purchase the ticket, so you are reserving it. The problem I have with the seats is that I'm short so it's a little hop to get all the way back into the seat. It is nice to recline though. But then I do hope that the seats get washed down every night...

I've been to a Flix House, further away, but it can be distracting to see in the corner of your eye a worker serving food to nearby patron, constant movement back and forth (but I'm probably bitter since I asked for a glass of water and never got it).

There's Vue, Odeon and Empire cinemas I've lived near and for the most part the Vue and Odeon are fine, the seats are comfortable enough and Odean's typically have nice screen-sizes whereas the closest Vue to me has 4 decent screens then a load more teeny ones. But I think that's more determined by area than the company.

The local Empire cinema is... not completely awful but the seats are not very comfortable for long films and I don't know what they put into their soda but it made me and my bf need to pee really badly by the end of the film. The plus is though that the tickets are a lot cheaper than the Vue and Odeon.

There's a buttload, but mostly it just comes down to the same movie theater chains (we have AMC, Century, and Regal; AMC is probably the nicest but I like Regal it's very relaxing) and then also a bunch of movie theater-pubs and second run theaters and arthouse movie theaters and stuff.

I honestly feel like most of the movie theaters in America fall along the same general lines. You have fairly standardized movie theater chains around the country, and then in the larger cities or college towns you get the same basic variations on themes for the independent ones - you have the casual ones that serve beer, your Alama Drafthouses, and you have the ones that show documentaries and French movies, or whatever.

There's a movie theater near where my family is that shows Asian action movies sometimes, which is kinda cool. It's actually kind of a crappy theater but that adds to the experience in a way. Can't really get there regularly anymore though.

Awesome! We only have the one, it's a 'B&B Theater' - which is a chain, though I'm not sure how wide-spread.

There are several 'grand screens', where you have seats like big recliners, with footrests that come up and such, there are several 'regular' screens, with normal (but cushy) seats, and there is the 21+ screen, with a bar outside and the reclining seats and it's own little concession area.

It's all about three years old, and is delightful. The last theater here had seats so old and hard, your butt would fall asleep in fifteen minutes, and it was ancient.

Also - retro night every Thursday, only five bucks. They showed 'Jaws' and 'The Sound of Music', stuff like that, and are currently showing all the Harry Potter movies in order.

We have two. The Harkins one is really nice and clean with comfy seats. Tickets are ten bucks for adults and eight for kids. The other one is a two dollar theater with really sticky floors. Movies always start late and I've been sent to the wrong room twice, but it's two dollars, so you get what you pay for.

The theater closest to me closed for remodeling but is going to open in a few months as one of those fancy alcohol-serving theaters with nice reclining seats and an actual restaurant. I'm looking forward to that.

I go to the movies a ridiculous amount and there's a various types of theaters.

Three of the AMC theaters by me are stadium seating, they're all newer and are between $10-15 depending on time of day/which day for prices.

One of the AMC theaters is a dine in theater with full recliner and bar service and full restaurant. I don't do that one often, the tickets are $20 plus I always get food at that one.

The one I go to the most often is a Cinepolis and it's just basic seats, but it's $6 on Tuesday which is why I go there.

Then occasionally I'll head in to NYC and those are typically stadium seating and range from $15-20.

The AMC in Times Square and Lincoln Square are full IMAX theaters, so I've seen Star Wars at both of those and well worth the $30 ticket price (when you include all those fees and reserved seating)

Cineworld is the only cinema chain operating within 50 miles of me. Tickets are around £9 and Unlimited is £17 a month. The one closest to me is dirty and the projection doesn't line up with the screen in some of them. But it has free parking and they get all the current big releases. There's another one two towns over that is smaller so not all the current films but it's so clean and nice. No free parking and the pay stations are broken so you can count on a parking invoice with a penalty fee two weeks after any visit. There is a council run car park nearby where you can park up to 4 hours and we park there if we go to that cinema.

Do cinemas in America start the film at the advertised time or do they start the trailers then? It used to be the films started at that time here but it changed about ten years ago. Now they play an assortment of adverts (phones, television shows, shops, etc) leading up to the start time, at the start time they run cinema info and reminders about putting phones on silent, and then fifteen to twenty minutes of trailers. Then there is the rating info and finally they play the film after all of that. A trip to the cinema takes approximately forever.

Mine is awesome. It used to be a garage and now they have a duplex theater with lots of cult and theme nights, a bar with beer, wine and sangria and a restaurant with yummy burgers, pizza and other dinners and snacks, and cool old chairs and couches instead of regular movie theater seats. And it's in walking distance from my place!

The only theater chain I frequent any more is one that started locally here in Utah called the Megaplex Theaters. They've got all the bells and whistles as far as IMAX, 3D, stadium seating, DBox, luxury seating (which is extra except on Tuesdays, where all movies are five bucks and concessions are discounted). The food court has real (fast) food, large popcorn and drinks are refillable once, and seating is reserved. They also have a loyalty card, which is awesome, and they have some movies open-captioned, which is great for people like me who are hard of hearing.

Regular tickets are $9.75, matinees are $6.75.

For the person downthread who asked, they have a couple of ads and then 20 minutes or so worth of previews at the movie "start time." They run a trivia-and-ad thing on a loop beforehand.

The theaters I've been to in Chicago are mostly AMCs, and they are $12 a pop, so I rarely go to the movies anymore since few of them are worth that much of my meager salary.

The one that's closest to me is Studio Movie Grill. I can eat and drink (alcohol!) while I watch the movie, it's nice. Sometimes the service isn't that great though. Or they forget to bring you your drink. :/

Really cool old-timey, one-screen theater that was lovingly remodled (and given a second, smaller screen 'round back) with lovely decor, fancy seats with flip-up tables, and you can get beer or cider on tap at the concession stand and there are waitstaff in the theater and you can order nachos and pizza and things.

City-wide, we have the big multiplexes with stadium seating, the artsy theaters, and the crumbling third-run theaters, all of which have their charms.

The two Carmike Cinemas near me recently changed to AMC. One has an IMAX screen. Both theaters have stadium seating. They are standard corporate movie theaters.

There is a local second run place called Omni Cinemas. The prices are $2 before 6 PM, $3 after, and 3D movies are $1 extra. The 2D movie tickets are $1.50 all day on Mondays. The same guy runs the theater, an arcade, and a mini golf course all in the same shopping center.

Small bags of popcorn and a small drink are $1.50 each with a refill for $0.50. A large popcorn, two large drinks, and one refill per item is $14. A kid's combo with a tray containing popcorn, a kid's drink, and a snack sized piece of candy is $4.50. They also serve nachos and cheese dip, hot dogs, and pizza.

They just installed new leather seats that rock and fixed the screens. The theater has been there for a long time. I remember seeing The Rocketeer there when I was four years old.

They have advertisements in the local free magazine with coupons for buy one get one free movie tickets, discounts on tokens at the arcade, and discounts on a game of mini golf.
