That's how I interpreted it. Especially after running across the book again after I was old enough to really think about it. As a kid, it was more like, "b-but he's so MEAN and that POOR TREE and that's WRONG!" D:

But see, I think that even your as-a-kid reaction isn't "wrong" per se. Because it shows kids giving from the tree's perspective - you feel for the tree, you're sad about what happens to the tree. So ideally, the kid should be more aware of people around them who give them things, and not take it for granted.
From that perspective, I'm okay with the book and the message.

Kid-me and adult-me agree with you 100%, but I do think that the "tree as selfless example to be followed" message is a more common interpretation, unfortunately.
