Indeed they are. Unfortunately in this case, different =/= good. Even if you're (rather curiously!) dead set on the idea of only casting white actresses with brown hair, they should've probably cast someone with better acting skills. But I digress. I'm not certain why it would be such an awful thing to consider casting someone else besides a white woman with brown hair in the female protagonist role. It also puzzles me that people feel like they need to argue so hard that diversity is unnecessary.
