70. Because religion is fiction?

[identity profile] norrowa.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You could just as easily argue that "justice" and "honor" and "selflessness" are fiction. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing.

[identity profile] errorism.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't those personality traits? I'd say believing in a giant man in the sky who made everything ever is believing in fiction. I can meet a selfless or honorable person, those qualities exist.

Did you just really say that.

You don't have to believe in a giant man in the sky who made everything ever to be religious.

I mean, I certainly fall firmly into the atheist camp and couldn't begin to wrap my head around believing in God, but I don't think we should hate other people or lose respect for them just for being religious. *shrug* It's all in how they handle it and how they view their own faith, in my opinion. We've all got our fictions that help us get by.

[identity profile] errorism.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my comment probably came off badly. I think it's totally cool to respect religions and people's non-asshole beliefs (you know, excluding the YOU'RE GOING TO HELL people), but it's a belief in God himself I can never comprehend, which was what I was targeting in that comment.

[identity profile] norrowa.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, don't worry. Like I said -- I'm in the same boat. Belief in God is definitely something that's just... not something I can understand on a personal level. But I'm like, hey -- we don't know either way, right? If I want to decide that no, I don't believe in God, I don't think it gives me the right to look down on the people who do. Even if it is a fiction, well, there's worse things... that is, when it's not motivating people to be all "YOU'RE GOING TO BURN IN HELL BECAUSE YOU DON'T FOLLOW THIS ARBITRARY SET OF RULES"/start holy wars/be bigots and awful people/etc.

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
As a Christian, I totally understand people just not getting it and that's okay. Some people's brains are wired in a way that makes the idea of a diety or higher power perfectly valid and it's a comfort to them. I personally love having the comfort of a spiritual belief. But people who don't? That's cool too, they just don't think like I do. :)

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. But it just seems rude when people are so dismissive of another person's faith as to call the being they regard as a savior and lord some imaginary giant in the sky or whatever. I've got friends from all faiths (and no faiths!), and it just seems like common decency that if someone believes in something (and is not, y'know, a nut), you should be respectful about it, Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Wiccan, whatever.

Except Scientology. We can all laugh at that one.

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I totally agree that there should be a certain level of respect on everyone's end.

And yeah, Scientology doesn't count as a religion. ;)

[identity profile] kayleen-san.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I keep you around ^^

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I <3 you. ^_^

And man, we need to get together just the two of us and have another long discussion about whatever we think of. Can't imagine when though...I mean, when can we get together when no one else is in town...I just don't know....

[identity profile] metronome.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
we sure had our talk

[identity profile] acaciabrown.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
What is that?

Richard Dawkins?

You honestly believe that's all the idea of religion stands for before it's institutionalized? That's ridiculous. If we're talking about Christianity then the bible needs to be taken under the light of Exegesis and you'll realize you're looking at texts that are hundreds of years old. How else are they going to portray a being like god? In TERMS they can understand - religion can mean so much more than that and a comment like this just basically shows the fact that you've formed this opinion without ANY depth.

Read some philosophy papers and then try to argue this so you won't look like such an idiot next time.

Oh, and by the way, I AM an Atheist.

[identity profile] liltingkricket.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to butt in without anything intelligent to say, but I totally less than three your icon. :D

[identity profile] leitao.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC! <3

I am Christian, and I get really annoyed when people just trample all over my beliefs and insult my intelligence by brushing my faith off as "fiction" because I believe in, apparently, "a big guy in the sky." Um, no. You can believe what you want, and say what you want . . . but it'd be nice if you were actually somewhat informed about the subject you decided to rather harshly criticize. >

[identity profile] leitao.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
The "you" of my last sentence being a collective "you," of course. Just to be clear. ^^;
