Even after haplessly stumbling upon endless amounts of the raunchiest most nonsensical porn imaginable, it still somehow shocks me when I find certain things. Bible porn fell into the "Dude I can't believe people actually write/get off on this stuff" category.

Yeah, see, I don't mind that. Intelligently picking things apart and not being a complete jerk for no reason is great, I encourage it, and I don't take offense when people seriously and maturely question things. But when you use what I refer to as "The Dawkins Technique" which basically dictates that people with religious beliefs are unintelligent by default and generally just plain not worth ever talking to because they're voluntarily complete idiots, then things get nasty. Unfortunately for whatever reason people are rallying behind this dude and he's becoming a pretty prominent voice for atheism.

Although I suppose that's good for religious folks once everyone realizes what a total asshat he is. I mean there are a lot of crazy religious jerks too, but it's hardly fair to put everyone under an umbrella on either side for it.

As someone who went through Catholic high school, I can promise that no one actually follows them. It's a pretty big talking point for ripping on Catholics, though.

The church has done some pretty hilariously/horribly messed up stuff over the years. Even I can't deny that.

Considering I find most porn to fall into the "I can't believe people actually write/get off on this stuff" I've learned to accept it as "People are really, really weird." I'll just go concern myself with this lovely thesis paper over here.

As long as people in a religious discussion are at least respectful of what the other says I generally don't have a problem and if they've done real research into what they're talking about (not just reading Wikipedia but going to a bookstore or library and reading serious scholarship on the topic) I tend not to mind. I've had plenty of funny religious discussions with fellow majors with various beliefs themselves, and there's never been a problem. My problem with Dawkins is that he has this iritating conviction that he's absolutely right. It made me a sad Meg. A friend of mine then proceeded to IM me bits and I translated into LOLcat just to feel better. I believe the best quote was, "For best cheezburger, remove Ceiling Cat."

I could never survive Catholic school, and I'm speaking at someone who was raised Catholic. I got to confirmation and went, "DO NOT WANT!" And then my dad made me watch Dogma and I became a religion major. Funny, that.

The RCC is pretty screwed up in terms of messed up actions, but most of the members of the religion are fairly okay with it. More of an attitude of, "We screwed up. It won't happen again." And I'm okay with that. What bothers me is people who won't let it go and use it as a means of complaining why it's EEEEEEEEEEEEVIL.

Pretty much. Mutual respect isn't going to happen any time soon on both ends though, I don't think. Well, not completely anyway.

Well, people do that with a lot of historical atrocities. Just look at the whining over slavery in the US that still persists. I guess everyone has to have their persecution complex to make them feel special.

I have all kinds of fun stories about Catholic school. It really is absolutely nutso, I'm actually graduating from the place in a week. The interesting part was, I went to Catholic elementary school and moved straight on to middle/high school, and it wasn't until the last four years or so that I realized how messed up the place was.

I had to be shut in a church for two days as a graduation requirement.

The way they cram Catholicism down peoples' throats is very seriously enough to get a majority of the students to hate it with a burning passion by the time they leave.

Personally, I'm looking forward to going to a scientific-centric school where I'm free to practice my religion as I'd like without anything being forced.

I only had to go to a Catholic grade school, but even then, I remembered being amazed that anyone who went there would stay Catholic. Almost all of my (admittedly few) friends wound up hardcore aethists after going through various states of goth-wiccan. Me, I still identify as Catholic, but there's a lot I just don't agree with. Mostly the Mary-worship. Looking at it from an outsider's perpective, it's not just half creepy (well, actually, most of Mass from an outsider's perspective would be creepy, but I draw the line at having a big procession to crown a statue of Mary with flowers every spring. That doesn't smack of pre-Christianity ritual at all....)

Um.

But kudos on making it through high school. Remembering all the hypocrisy that went into grade school, I can only imagine how much worse it would be with horny teenagers and all.

Honestly, I think the only things that kept me sticking it out were the school's choir (Some of the most awesome people I've met - also some of the most religiously dedicated) and its director, a recent convert (Who, much to my dismay, died in the middle of the first semester of my senior year).

If it hadn't been for those dudes, I probably would've dropped it. I'm already kind of burnt out on the whole deal because the month of/before graduation is nothing but churchchurchchurchchurch.

Aaaah, May crownings! I never really got those, but I know some people make a huge deal out of it. I can totally understand why that would bother someone, especially since it's like bordering on (if not crossing the line of) idolatry. I think that most people have parts of it that they don't agree with, myself included.
