27. Wow. Storyline-wise? Understandable. Gameplay-wise? Dude, fail. I've wanted to throw my PS2 out the window a million times because of gameplay frustrations with KHI (camera, anyone? dsfgsdfgs). I still love it, but eh. KHII was all sorts of amazing fun to play for me, and I'm definitely not the only one who thinks so, so take a step down from your high horse and gtfo.

38. ME. TOO.

My thoughts exactly. I thought KH was okay, but it was the second game that got me into the series, and it's now one of my favorites.

So, baaa. :)

I'm personally really tempted to call troll on 27, if only because of the fact that if they really were a game designer who had legitimate reasons for hating the game exactly that much, they would have stated them and worded their secret in a way that didn't just annoy people, but perhaps instigated some intelligent debate. Instead, it just comes off as unnecessarily angry and wanky. :T

A part of me would agree if not for my game designer-hopeful friend. He hates any and ALL RPGs after the Final Fantasy VI era, even those he has never played. If they're not from that time, they are automatically inferior and he will let you know it. Even the mere mention of some post-FFVI JRPG gets him to say something negative and sometimes even rude.

However, since the secret in question does go over-the-top, I'm also hoping it's a troll.

Yeah, that's kind of where any credibility to your knowledge as a game designer gets utterly lost, and you really just seem like more of an ignorant elitist snob to me. No offense to your friend, but criticizing and hating an entire generation of video games on the sole basis that it's... a new generation? Gah. :/

[identity profile] demonoflight.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
KHII fails at plot. I mean, the Disney portions are really tacked on compared to KH and Xenmas is kind of flimsy. But holy crap I don't care, the new characters are awesome and it has some amazing character moments and you get to rescue Santa Claus (TNBC style, no less!!!) and it's so fun to play~

Except when Demyx kills you the third time with his bloody time limits. I love you, Dem-Dem, but if you tell me to kill a bajillion water clones in ten seconds ONE MORE TIME I'll grab that sitar and stick it where the sun don't shine.

I agree with all of that. And the failplot is really a winplot if you think about it, because seriously, it's just too ridiculous not to be able to get fantastic amounts of crack out of it. The game as a whole is still immensely entertaining because of that, and honestly -- isn't entertainment the main reason we even play video games? But yes, it has its pretty amazing moments and characters too, and people can snark all they want about the overload of glitter but that still doesn't change the fact that the art and special effects were gorgeous.

hahaha dfgslkd oh my god, Demyx. :| I can't even remember how I managed to get through the time trial battle the first time; I've tried to play through it again repeatedly since I have a save game right before that, and I wanted to show a friend the part where Goofy 'dies', but sdfgs I CAN'T.

Actually, I was kind of iffy about KHII's gameplay as well. I mean, the battle system and camera were greatly improved, but the world layouts of KHI had more platforming and challenge to me, particularly Hollow Bastion. Then again, my personal favorite is Re:CoM in plot -and- gameplay. /dork

But methinks this is a troll.

KHII's gameplay definitely wasn't flawless, and I can see how hardcore gamers who like being challenged would've been disappointed -- aside from the worlds, the reaction commands, as an example, which made everything really easy (perhaps combinations of different buttons for different commands would have been neat). So I suppose it depends on what you really wanted out of the game; KHI was more satisfying after you figured out a world or boss battle, but it wasn't as entertaining to me as KHII was in general, where I mostly just got impatient waiting for the next page of the full story to unfold and didn't care so much about individual world plots or battles. I'm honestly hoping KHIII manages to combine complex worlds with a badass battle system and an intriguing plot, which people probably were expecting with KHII, but I still have faith in Squeenix's ability to pull it off with one more try!

I haven't taken a look at Re:CoM yet, but I do really love CoM's gameplay. It seems to be a general consensus that it's the most interesting and fun game in the series (if difficult to actually play), from what I've seen, so I don't think you need to worry about being a dork? 8D
