It's gross, I agree. Gross, pervasive, and irresponsible.

Re: odds and ends story ideas

Mushroom parasite girl has been done, she is in Brian Lumley's Necroscope series. One of the later books. Can't remember which.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like the idea of her & I like the actress, but constantly doing the I'M A WOMAN NOW stuff is blah. I should also say that I'm not caught up, I think I'm 1.5 seasons behind, so I have no idea what new nonsense has been going on.

Should I quit my job for TEFL

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can take a full time CELTA course at the end of the month if I quit my salary job now. I hate my job, have been wanting to escape basically since I started 9 months ago - not had much luck with job applications. I taught English abroad previously and really enjoyed it, but in a country that didn't require CELTA certification or anything. I'm thinking now about building my career more in TEFL and going abroad again, or at least teaching here in the US (full time jobs are apparently hard to get but there are part time possibilities).

Problem: I have expensive rent, not a lot of savings, and the class is expensive. If I didn't get a job right away I'd be pretty fucked, but if I got a part time job I might be able to coast just a little. I'd be willing to do a few part time jobs, if it meant getting out of my current horrible work situation, and my optimistic side says getting a CELTA might help pad my resume anyway.

Basically I need to decide tomorrow, because I'll need to put in my two weeks in order to start this course.

Anyone done CELTA? Or taught English in the US or otherwise have TEFL-related career?

OP

Those are my questions too.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
OP is very clearly implying that other mixes aren't as thoughtful or as long as hers, nor are they chosen according to characters' tastes, so it's not solely a question about popular vs. unpopular. The fact that it contrasts an "other girl" fan who for some reason dresses like a schoolgirl from the 1960s or a vintage clothing aficionado vs. the OP, who wears a baggy t-shirt and pants - not an unusual choice in fandom or IRL, I assure you - also carries that hint of "not like other girls".

Perhaps OP didn't mean it that way, but I can definitely see where other users are seeing it.

As part of my Elections in the UK and why it bugs me series of posts:
My car exhaust pipe has a leak in it. I gotta get that fixed. Putting running a hose from the tailpipe to the cabin is part of my suicide plan. A reminder that Theresa May has stated she has "Big Plans" for people who have mental ill health. So I need to keep my suicide plan current.

Re: Favorite and least favorite last names

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I only hate names if they are so ridiculous it seems mean to name a child that.

Like people who name their children after fandom things, fandom things are *not* for a person, they are for a pet at the most.

I read the other day about people naming their children Kylo Ren, and I'm just like no, stop.

I also just realized this said last name, whoops on my part.

A mix between being really sad about him being hurt, and really turned on by the act of mopping the blood off his face and hands. Probably not help by the fact that I was infatuated with him and we'd fucked a few times.

I was a screwed up hormonal teenager and it was basically some kind of weird aftercare kink thing, I guess?

Involving actors in fandom

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
My friend's just posted a video she took at some kind of fan convention thing of her telling an actor about the existence of fanfiction of him and another dude. He (understandably) seemed pretty uncomfortable about it and just...why? Why would you do that?!

What is wrong with people?! I just seriously don't get that impulse at all...whether it's telling them at conventions, or presenting them with porny fanart as I've heard of in the past or tweeting them links to fic or whatever, I just...don't understand what makes someone think that's an okay thing to do?

(And no I'm not going to say who it is, sorry Anti-Vague Anon, but I know she sometimes posts here and would definitely figure it out if I said...she might anyway, but hopefully not.)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't posted ITT but I definitely interpreted it this way as well, FWIW

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I would start by making your fanmixes shorter. There's literally nothing stopping you from making a fanmix that's 30-40 minutes instead of 2 hours.

And if you really, really care about getting more people to listen to your fanmixes, I'd say pick a couple of more popular tracks that you don't hate and include them along with your other more eclectic choices.

In my experience, there are two things that are most likely to get people to give your mix a try: the first one is cool cover art, and the second is seeing at least one track they know and like on the lineup.

Under 20 is young, over 80 is old, 45 is middle-aged, and elderly starts when you start acting fuckin' elderly. My fellows out there who know a lot of older people know exactly what I mean.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, just be glad you don't have a weird last name!

Also, at least you can actually tell how to pronounce that one...

I'd never change my name because I do value my family, and that's what it means for me, but it would be nice to have a name that 1) is easy to pronounce (or at least you can tell how to pronounce from the spelling), 2) is slightly more common (so that googling my first & last name didn't lead EXACTLY TO ME EVERY TIME).

I'm not planning to get married so I wouldn't change my name that way, either. (But if I ever hyphenated...damn, somebody would have to love me an awful lot to hyphenate their name with mine!).

Maybe because the last version of the Master was preoccupied with world domination and turning the Doctor into a house elf?

Different storylines require different actions on the part of the characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, why are you so sure that people who disagree with you about Doctor Who don't watch Doctor Who and/or aren't real fans

If you liked working abroad, I'd get your CELTA and try to get another job abroad.

You're right. I was remembering wrong.

I can still sympathize with needing to get out of there though. Again, probably because of my personal issues.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is how it came across to me as well.

Lady Tremaine from Disney's Cinderella and Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter. Terrible, cruel, and manipulative.

Dude, don't even give her the satisfaction of offing yourself. Stay alive from spite if you have to. You can get through this.

Re: Job Talk

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've been feeling like I need to change careers but I really have no idea where to begin. Going back to school sounds so exhausting (I already spent too long in school) and I wouldn't want to go back without knowing what to do anyway.

I just don't know what I want to do at all and I have no hookups to get me anywhere so it feels like my life will just end up being depressing unemployment and being underpaid.

If they like the ship, they should like the ship. Gender being a construct these days and all of that. That's the great thing about a continuity where characters are the same people with different bodies and personalities. ::shrug::
