*shrug* I'm not one of the anons who criticized OP as being smug, elitist or pretentious. I think that's a bit too harsh, but at the same time, I can see why the secret set off those alarm bells for some people. Your interpretation may be different, but telling other people that those hints aren't there or that they're reading it that way "in bad faith" is... hrrmm. As if you're saying everyone who disagrees with you is interrogating the text from the wrong perspective (and that yours is the right, generous and good one), get my meaning?

The problem is that the "not like other girls" attitude can be a pretty sneaky thing, and no, portraying yourself as self-deprecating doesn't necessarily mean OP isn't doing it unconsciously. I mean... Taylor Swift's "You Belong to Me" is a classic example of the narrator contrasting herself as a t-shirt and sneakers wearing bystander as opposed to a popular cheerleader who wears short skirts. As if being a non-cheerleader less popular kid is an unusual thing in high school, haha.

While I sympathize with OP, like I said earlier, the two things they seem to want are in direct conflict. Resolving those two conflicting things is going to be tough, but it might help if they were able to take a step back and see that it's not personal, nor is it necessarily a scathing indictment of people who try hard to make unique things.

NAYRT and I didn't really want to get in on this, because I think it is a little unfair on OP who I'm sure is a fine person BUT -

Just because you're being self-deprecating doesn't mean you can't also be kind of elitist. Like, the secret positions itself in a way where it's self-deprecating in the sense that OP's stuff isn't popular, while simultaneously implying that OP's stuff is fundamentally better than other peoples' stuff and that the only reason other peoples' stuff is more popular is because OP is a bit anti-social. It's the idea that you know what makes *truly* good fan mixes, that you have more substance and skill than other people but just aren't as flashy, etc, etc.

And I really don't want to be harsh about it, because it's fine and it happens and the only reason I recognize it is because I do the same thing. I'm sure a lot of people do it. It's not the end of the world (and whoever said something about "nothing to contribute to the world" is dead wrong). But the secret itself is self-deprecating in a way that's also weirdly self-congratulatory. That's absolutely a true analysis of the secret.

My friend explained the concept of the sympathy boner to me once. I was skeptical. Then he brought other guys into the conversation and they were like "shit. that happens to you too?" and "every time my girlfriend cries" *all of them nod*.

So weird.

Because sometimes it is nice to be chased instead of chaste. It makes me feel pretty and desirable.

What career are you in now?

Re: Age

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
My answers were a little different (mainly because I was trying to stick to the young/middle-aged/old labels without adding any). However, I might just want to change my answer to this, because it's spot on.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please, you're saying it'd be impossible to have inserted a kiss into that storyline? It could have happened just as easily as it did in series 8.

People can be annoyed that a ship only became canon when it's het.

I am sure there are prisons just full of men who are exactly the right type to make you feel as pretty as you want.

If it comes down to killing myself quietly and relatively painfree with CO poisoning or dying slowly of starvation and disease homeless in the gutter, I'm taking the first. It'd be better if voluntary euthanasia was legal in the UK though so I could die relatively painfree in comfort and in company. This is the reason the Tories oppose it though, they know that the rush to die rather than suffer under the Tories would be overwhelming. They want people to stay alive and suffer under them.

My LJ screenname, Graziaplena, is an Italian last name -- it literally means "full of grace" and is a phrase from the Hail Mary in Latin. That's a good one.

I was never a die-hard fan of the show but I liked watching it, I gave up when Abbie left tho, I just didn't like the idea of it without her and I liked her best.

This list could be my list.

Okay except Loki. I don't mind him but he's not a favorite unless you're talking Norse mythology.

I am also very curious which episode it was.

Re: Involving actors in fandom

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is obvious bullshit.

Any actor connected to fandom enough to go to cons already knows they have disturbing fanfic about them. Hell, they rely on it to keep the con fees rolling in. They are not going to be disturbed or discomforted by fans telling them about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
If they had Simm's Master get kissyface with 10's Doctor in their storylines it would have been rapey as hell. Granted some people get off on that, but considering there is a secret about appropriate consent and seduction a few spots up, I can't see how it would have been well received at all.

What media did you give up on? Why?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
TVs, books, video games, whatever.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I... literally wrote "verbal"????? Your reading comprehension is a bit off.

Re: What super weird coincidences have you experienced?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
No, but I'd hold off on any trips to North Dakota.

Oh man, I've had stuff like that happen several times, but of course right now I can't think of any examples. It's definitely weird though!

If she didn't want to have an autistic for a child she ought to have skipped those vaccines.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Passive versus active. One is being done to you, the other is you doing something. Especially if, knowing you're impaired, you choose to act in a way that invites harm to others, that's still an actionable offence even if mitigating factors are accepted at trial.

Re: How do I add a job to my resume succinctly when I did it a bit of every thing at my job?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I mean that can all be put under your skills depending on how you organize your resume.

But if there is a specific job you are going for where some of those skills are not necessary, you can add and subtract as you feel fit.

I'd also say if there's anything you downright HATED doing and it's not even applicable to the job you want, don't put it down as a skill. Resumes are supposed to be brief anyway and if there's something they need you to do that isn't on there, it's their job to ask.

You do know there is a gap between being flirtatious and wanting to be wanted, and actual rape.

Okay! I think I will focus on my supervising and communication skills. I don't want another hard labor job.
