But she's black AND gay! Clearly SJW shenanigans are afoot!

DA
In fairness a Twofer Minority is usually the sign of a poorly thought out character just introduced as pandering to the base.

Of course in Who the real pandering was Missy, Danny Pink, Clara, and Me. All really bad characters, who never really worked within the show, but all conceived in an attempt to placate the girls over on The Mary Sue and Jezebel. None of them worked out.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Could you be more wrong?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I could be saying the opposite of what I said (or trying to quote Chandler from Friends), that would be very wrong because what I did say was very correct.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, AYRT is right, you couldn't be more wrong.

I would just like to strongly express my disagreement with several of the specific judgments in this post, with the specific idea that "a Twofer minority is usually a sign of a poorly thought out character", and with the apparent underlying justifications for said judgments.

I think several of those characters are good and the idea that "Twofer minorities" are bad characters seems insanely hostile to a significant class of depictions of the human experience for no good reason whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-18 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree wholeheartedly.

I get it is a troll comment and Anon probably knows all of those were the opposite (no idea who is Me, stopped watching after the season with Danny). Missy and Clara Moffat's self-indulgence (I like Clara, but dislike 11, 12 is ... okayish? Still not my thing as a character but not as bad. I did not fancy 1st Doctor much as well due to patronisation and yep, I know it was propaganda made for kids to learn 'history' while it failed at it).

Show does not do pandering much - it is more responses to criticism and they are usually background characters like that bit with a horse ... whose thoughts 11 read and told owner the horse is a woman not a man because horses so would be like humans... (sure, they could have such concepts but ... as horses). Not sure on Vastra and Jenny as I absolutely did not get them - they were inserted so chaotically without any background that they are possibly both.

You can only have one or the other, didn't you know?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Its probably because shes a lesbian not because shes black. Op was probably just wary because he or she thought her character would be overdone or exploited to the point you could say "no body says that". There has already been a black companion, Martha <3 she was awesome and my crush lol.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
And Moffat has a track record of trying to make all his companions super special in some way. Except for Rory. Rory was awesome because it was a long time until Moffat started trying to write him as awesome, at which point he stopped being awesome.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
but OP specifically said it was for reasons to do with it pandering to SJWs, not because of Moffat

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Last couple of years Moffat has been noticeably attempting to pander to his SJW critics. He's done it poorly, but there is no denying he's been doing it.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Examples, please? Because all I've seen are BBC mandated colourblind casting and a willingness to write a wide variety of characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
but, again, OP didn't mention Moffat

All companions are super special in some way. That's why they are chosen as companions.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-18 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That hasn't always been true, though. Even in the modern Doctor Who.

Rose was just an ordinary shop girl. Mind-melding with the TARDIS was something that happened during her travels with the Doctor, and then when he regenerated he kind of imprinted on her.

Martha was smart and tough and determined enough to spend a year walking the Earth, carrying her story of the Doctor, but it wasn't due to some super special destiny.

Donna was "just a temp" but her compassion and her toughness and her refusal to take crap from anyone, including the Doctor himself, made her a valuable companion at a time when the Doctor was constantly in danger of wallowing in self-pity.

It wasn't until Amy, who grew up with a crack in her wall, that the companions seemed to have super-special destinies.

Exactly.

And Martha is great!

(Anonymous) 2017-05-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Martha for life <3!!!!

She's so bad she don't need the Doctor- - she is a doctor- -MD!!!

Just cruising by for the Martha love!

(Anonymous) 2017-05-18 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
When Martha was first introduced, though, there were a lot of complaints that she was going to be a "token black character" and a "twofer" (because she was both black AND female) and how "unrealistic" it was that the doctor had now had two black companions in such a short time span when "everybody knows there are hardly any black people in England."

(I'm in London right now. There are plenty of black people. It's one of the most diverse cities in the world.)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-19 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Check the Brexit voting results. London ain't Britain no more. Brexit was rejected by four foreign parts of the UK. Norn Ireland. Liverpool the Republic of Ireland's colony on Mainland UK. Scotland. And London. London is Singapore in the North, it stopped being a British city in the 1980s.

"Foreign parts of the UK"?!?!

Sod off.
