When he was done, he would close his eyes and begin to snore softly and Dany would lie beside him, her body bruised and sore, hurting too much for sleep.

Day followed day, and night followed night, until Dany knew she could not endure a moment longer. She would kill herself rather than go on, she decided one night…"

Yeah, this is every 13 year old girl's fantasy.

omg. terrible prose and romance novel cliches. can't tell if GRRM is getting off on it or not, which makes me uncomfortable

Pretty sure GRRM does get off on it, IIRC he said in an interview that he thinks Dany (book!Dany, no less) is "hot" and his ideal date. It's actually quite creepy to think a 60-something year old man is essentially writing porn about little girls, going in depth about their breasts, etc. in retrospect.

I always think this scene is taken out of context? Replying here because I don't want to reply to the three different places it's appeared.

If you look at the context, the thing that is painful for Dany is switching to a lifestyle where most of the day is spent on horseback. This passage is about how life is hell because she has all these saddlesores but isn't allowed to complain or get off her horse and walk or sit down and rest because she's living Dothraki life now and those things are shameful/below her status. It's not the sex causing her bruises and sores because it's so ~rough~. Literally just lying still not doing anything is constant pain (hence why she cries herself to sleep). The whole passage of "everything sucks" leads up to a breakthrough where her sores heal and then she comes into her own in the tribe. That feeling of going from an outsider who can't deal with the horse-riding life to surviving it and coming out stronger, and being one of them is a huge part of Dany's arc and a source of her sense of confidence and power.

Like, I still think the rough rape-y doggy-style sex is totally a sexual fantasy for GRRM (it's a kink of mine as well, and I can definitely recognize the tropes of it in that description...), and it's also just true that Dany is just straightforwardedly having painful and unpleasant sex. But she'd be bruised and sore and crying herself to sleep even if she wasn't having sex, and I've seen that passage quoted so much without any of the surrounding parts that I'm pretty sure people just straight up forgot that detail. I imagine sex is not the first thing I'd want if I had saddle sores, but I imagine it's probably not that much worse than just sleeping either.

This sounds like a looooot of reaching coming from someone who's incredibly biased. I'm sorry, but you can't make a claim like "oh, she'd be crying and bruised without the sex anyway" when, no, in this specific context, she is bruised and in pain from all the rough non-consensual sex. Like, hand wave harder, anon.
