Alternative solutions:

-Get a houseplant (I personally recommend a "sensitive plant," you can touch them and they react)
-Get a robotic toy pet (Digibirds, Furreal Friends, etc.)
-Get an electronic pet (Tamagotchi)
-Get an online pet (ex. various pet/clickable sites)
-Get a pet video game (Nintendogs, Petz, etc.)
-Volunteer at a shelter
-Start pet-sitting/walking

It is very easy to do things impulsively when you don't feel good. Remember, you should always put your pet before yourself. If you think it would be selfish to get a pet, then don't.

HOWEVER, if you must get a living, breathing pet, I'd say a rat would be hardy and affectionate enough for you. Other animals might get too stressed from moving too much.

Volunteering and sitting/walking are great ideas as they will also get you (OP) out of the house and socializing more :)
