Can you look into fostering?

I don't know about where you live, but the local shelters in my city usually have fostering programs, where you can care for an animal to give them a break from the shelter. The shelter usually provides the food and supplies for the animal too. That could solve the money problem, and allow you to see if a pet could fit into your life.

Also kudos to thinking about all these things instead of just impulsively getting a pet without a second thought.
