Re: Someone tell me I shouldn't impulsively get a pet
I think everybody has covered all the reasons why already.
Pets are a commitment. You need to be ready and willing to take care of their needs as another living being just as much as you're hoping it will help you as well. You pretty much already mentioned in your post the whole argument for why this is a bad idea. Just. Don't.
Volunteering at a shelter might be a good compromise. You can still get the company of animals who will just be glad to see you/get some attention, you'll still be able to do the walking, you'll be getting "out" (I know it helps my mental health to not stay in my apartment all the time) and you would have the chance to socialize with the other shelter/rescue workers/volunteers.
You would also see firsthand all the animals that are surrendered/given up/homeless because someone just wanted a pet and didn't think through whether they could actually handle it and then wanted the shelter/rescue to take their problem off their hands.
Go help some animals. But don't take on something you've already said you can't handle right now.
