48. Write whatever you want to write. I know a ton of people who write relationship stories because that's what they're good at writing, but they love gen. I know people who would prefer more gen, but can't write/FEEL they can't write. I personally love character relationships, platonic-friendship or platonic-familial or romantic or sexual, but tend to write shippy stuff because that's what I feel most comfortable writing and what usually sparks my interest. But I loev me some genfic. =D SO START YOUR REVOLUTION, GO ON~ You will have people who appreciate it, no matter what it looks like.

61. Manga/anime series aimed mostly towards a male audience are going to have fanservice and as much cuteness/sexiness/etc from the female characters as possible. Manga/anime series aimed towards teenage girls (or even shounen series that KNOW there's going to be a large female fanbase) tend to try to show the boys as pretty/handsome/built, etc, as possible. It's eye candy. As long as the character is being portrayed as something more than simple eye candy, relax about it.

63. She would not really be that weight. Manga has NEVER equalled real life, and Bleach seems to be HORRIBLE at giving realistic stats. Don't try to copy something that isn't trying to fact check at all, you'll only make yourself unhealthy- and look horrible on top of that if that's why you're doing it.

61. I always think about Faye Valentine when people complain about fan service. She's probably Fan Service in (beautiful) human form, and makes Jessica Rabbit seem dowdy. But she is also one of the best developed female characters in anime.

Exactly! Another great example is Major Kusanagi, from Ghost in the Shell- a ton of fanservice for her character, but she's seriously one of the most badass anime women, ever. Ever. No questions.

I think where people trip up is automatically assuming that showing that a character is sexy, ie acknowledging that their sex appeal is a part of them, just as valid as any other part, is automatically "objectifying" them. As long as no one's trying to say that's the extent of their worth, it's not objectification.

And again, Bleach is sorta famous for showing its male characters in a fanservice-y light all the time. I've never seen complaints about THAT, or how it's "objectifying men." XD;

The funny thing about #61 is that Orihime is actually never ever objectified, save for that one image (which is also the only picture in the artbook that features female characters in a fanservicey light - the rest of the book is almsot completely made up of eyecandy for girls). So while I understand what the OP was getting at, but... why Orihime? Why not someone who is actually used for fanservice?

I mean, Matsumoto? Yeah. Yoruichi? Sure. Nel? Of course! But Orihime...

I really don't think that was the point.
The point is that it seems like the vast majority of female characters have to be turned into sex objects at some point, even if they're not shown that way in the series-- actually, I think someone who's objectified like this when she's completely different in the show is a great example.

Re: Oh also-

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that this happens all the time, but I don't think that's a bad thing, either. Showcasing that a character is sexy doesn't necessarily mean "OH, SEXY = SEX OBJECT = NO RESPECT NAO." And male characters get a ton of "objectifying," when it comes to that- dressed in fancy outfits or sans shirts or in risque poses, etc. Fanservice is fanservice and it exists for tons of series, for both female and male characters.

Your icon is gorgeous, what's it from? =O

Re: Oh also-

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. But, as what [livejournal.com profile] poisontea said, showing a character as sexy and gorgeous is not necessarily degrading. I mean, otherwise everyone should always be fully dressed from ehad to toe. IMO as long as the fanservice is tasteful and kept to a minimum (and it's equal-opportunity, like in Bleach) I'm not complaining. Everyone likes to look at pretty things.

Re: Oh also-

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, and that proves one of my other points, too. Those other characters you mention are STRONG and badass (well, I don't know about Nel, offhand...). So showing them as sexy, sex appeal as being a part of them... I don't really see that as "objectifying." No one's saying they're only any good as sexual icons, or trying to imply that that's the extent of their worth.

And yeah, when the male characters in that series are being used the MOST for fanservice, it sorta makes me wtf the person's complaint about girls being victims of it.

Re: Oh also-

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in Bleach some female characters may go around showing off their boobs (or other assets), but they're well-rounded (ha ha), strong characters and usually have more balls than most guys, including poor Ichigo himself. (As for Nel... well, I won't spoil it if you only watch the anime, but she's cool. :D)

Same with, say, Motoko from Ghost in the Shell (the anime) - she may wear revealing clothes and stuff from time to time, but it's always tastefully done, and never changes the fact that she's a very good character and there's much, much more to her than T&A.
