With weddings in the US you absolutely never know if you'll be invited because it could be a very intimate wedding or upwards of 300 guests (or if it's an Indian wedding, minimum 500 guests)

I can just imagine the culture shock between Korea, Israel, and the US!

Yeah. In this case, I just went to her and said "so I'm gonna be super blunt because I have no idea how things work here, and I won't be offended either way, but am I invited (so I know if to budget in a gift)?"
Thankfully she took it okay!

What almost makes it worse is that I hardly have an accent when I speak English. So people think I'm American - just a kind of loud, aggressive, argumentative, and socially awkward one, I guess. Often I'll introduce myself and be like "don't let the accent confuse you, I've only been here about a year".

I'm glad she took it okay and yes, you never know how people will be about those kinds of things (I thought it was kind of awkward when my one coworker got married on a Thursday night and only invited half of the office. So a bunch of coworkers had to leave early to attend his wedding and it was really weird)

And weddings are also really different depending on what part of the US you live in. Weddings in the Northeast versus the South used to be really different but things are sort of become more insane/bridezilla like.

Yeah, Israeli weddings are often more like what you described Indian weddings - they're huge, boisterous events. Part of that is because Israel is so small, so of COURSE you invite everybody... and depending on the ages of the couple, the parents will be adding some of their own friends/coworkers etc. to the list. My sister had 550 at her wedding, haha. But it's also usually just a one-evening affair, and the rest of the celebrations are smaller.

That situation does sound really awkward :X I mean of course it's his prerogative to invite who he wants, it's his wedding, but having half the office leave early for it... yeah.

What can you do. Life is awkward enough in your own culture, then imagine how crazy it gets when you try to be part of another one...
