I thought they also used the horns to break through thinner ice to reach the surface for air?

Either way, I remember being rather horrified when I found out the 'horn' is actually a tooth that keeps growing and has busted through their lip. :(

That's better than what I heard once, that the narwhal tusk was actually like... solidified nose hair XD

Yeah, but elephant tusks aren't bursting through their lips. That's the part that got me.

But now I was just reading about narwhals and it turns out the 'horn' doesn't have enamel like most 'teeth' do and so there are little holes that they can feel temperature changes in, and the water enters the 'horn' and travels to their brain and signals various things. Also, they can apparently taste via it too. This entire idea is wigging me out. I mean it's cool as heck and go scientists! But holes and enamel-less teeth and *shudder*
