Re: Reviewing a book someone you know wrote

If this isn't a situation where you feel obligated to leave a review (e.g. they sent you an advanced copy to review, or they're a good friend and will definitely notice and be bothered if you don't review it) then I'd say just don't leave a review at all. I mean, if you don't want to hurt them but you don't want to lie either, just not saying anything seems the obvious answer to me.

If you have to review, then I'd say if you're close with this person leave a fairly positive review, while still mentioning a couple of the things you had the biggest issue with. If you're not close with them (but still have to leave a review for some reason?) then still try to spare their feelings a little by mentioning more positive things than you probably would otherwise, but also be more open about the parts you had issues with.
