IMO, the cleverness lies in that it tries (and succeeds) at being something beyond the thousandth Sherlock Holmes adaptation. Some would say it barely resembles Sherlock Holmes at all, and as a fan of ACD's work ordinarily that would bother me. But Elementary is more like an interesting AU and I think that's what makes it work. It's not a faithful adaptation like the Granada version, but unlike BBC's Sherlock, it achieves a better balance between being a show that's about the two main characters' personal lives and a detective show. You get the thoughtful character development (far more so than in ACD's stories or Sherlock) but you also get an actual mystery - so many adaptations don't deliver that.

Thank you for this insight, nonny. I'm a big fan of ACD and the Grand adaptation and have been avoiding Elementary like the plague. This makes me think maybe I should give it a go though.

If it doesn't resemble Sherlock Holmes they should have just NOT marketed it as a Sherlock Holmes adaption just to cash in on that fanbase. Because in that case it's simply not a proper adaption. Its like those AU fanfics where you can swap out the character names and they would be unrecognisable and without any connection to the original canon. Those are hated by quite a few people for a reason.
