Yep.

I haven't seen it yet, but I saw that in a gifset & thought the gif maker was joking.

That's a legit line? Ok, you're right, that's a bit weird. Has Star-Lord been on Tumblr since the last movie?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously Earth (Terren) stuff gets out into the larger universe. Why not memes?
el_regrs: (LOL)

Doubtful. If Star-lord's been exposed to any kind of internet, then what the fuck is he getting all excited about a Zune for?!

Hahahaha

Thank you so much for this laugh.

well, an upgrade is an upgrade. :p

Is....trash panda a new thing? I thought it had been around for a while.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been. It's not at all out of place in Quill's 80's knowledgebase.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Plus there's nothing to indicate that the rest of the universe has no contact with Earth at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember "trash panda" being a thing in the 80s,to be honest. To me it sounds more like current facetious slang, like calling manta rays "sea flap flaps". Even if the rest of the universe is has knowledge of Terran slang, i can see where it might be a little distracting. It's kind of like those scenes in Doctor Who where they're on a faraway planet, but if you know what a rock quarry looks like, the look of it doesn't fit with the supposedly exotic setting.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a thing only in the sense that we didn't have stuff like twitter or tumbler, so memes weren't so....meme-y. But "trash panda" is not even remotely new, I heard it as 80's kid so he obviously heard it from his childhood too, while he was still on Earth. Tumblr didn't invent it.

Rocket shrugs it off, because he gets it's probably still an insult, but he doesn't know wtf Star Lord's talking about. People insulting others with language and jargon they don't know is even more of a thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Another 80s kid here, who also didn't hear the term "trash panda" as a common phrase. Even if it was known in the 80s, like the OP I mostly associate it with the internet (and not necessarily just tumblr) as it is now, so it sounds a bit odd to me, too. Not enough to spoil the scene, but it made me go "...huh."

"People insulting others with language and jargon they don't know is even more of a thing."

I'm confused. Did anyone, much less ayrt say this wasn't a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't the movie drop a Leeroy Jenkins reference too, or am I mistaken?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I either don't remember it, or they did not (looked it up online and nothing points it out). Unless baby Groot saying "I am Groot" and running off into danger counts as a reference?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
It felt a little to Internet-y for me too.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't really find anything wrong with it. A raccoon is a distant (but still fairly close) relative of the red panda, and they are known for digging around in the trash. They could have called him a dumpster cat or something and it still would have meant the same thing.

The word "trash" doesn't really scream "tumblr" to me unless it's used in the way of "lol u r trash [three laughing emojis)" or "I'm total GotG trash XD."

This comment expresses my feelings about this secret much more eloquently than I would have been able to.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much my thoughts, too. It is worth noting that I have a distant at best relationship with tumblr culture, so I wouldn't really know what sounds tumblr-ish anyway. But at the same time it makes perfect sense to me.

Was it a callback to Parks and Rec?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
The joke worked for me, but I ultimately felt the same way deep down. "Trash panda" is a relatively recent term and there is no way in hell Peter would know it.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I heard 'trash panda' as a kid. The internet didn't invent it.
