(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)But I'm fine with, and actually intrigued by, the idea of a non-male Doctor (or a non-white Doctor, or a non-whatever-one-thinks-of-as-traditional Doctor.)
Those who argue from Who canon need to be very careful of what they assert; the only thing that's been constant in over half a century of episodes is that writers have contradicted each other (and probably themselves at some point) at every turn in the Whoniverse. (And let's not even go into the audio adventures or the various book adventures. That way lies madness.) That there have been attempts at regulating canon is unmistakeable. That those attempts are successful is ... not.
tl;dr: Because We Always Did It That Way is no way to go into the universe of a madman in a dimensionally transcendent blue box. It will just make you seem very, very silly.
Nor does it do anyone any favors to assert that the desire for change is solely because of some humorless attempt to be a Social Justice Warrior. For one thing, people can have a genuine interest in changing the tradition of their favorite show that has more to do with "What If?" and less to do with some social justice punch list. For another thing, being a Social Justice Warrior (horrors!) isn't actually a bad thing unless one's a jerk about it.
Huh. It turned out to be a little longer than I expected it to be.
