Heard a Tracy Chapman song without knowing she sang it, thought the singer was a man.

Same. Doesn't help that Tracy can be a guy's name.

That reminds me of one of mine. I assumed Grace Kelly was a man because the male singer Mika had a song with the line "I wanna be like Grace Kelly".

Because for some reason a man with the name Grace was more likely than a man saying he wants to be like a woman. Good job, my brain.

Today I Learned.

Literally, thanks to your comment, I've just learned Tracy Chapman is a woman. I'm really only familiar with "Fast Car" and the album cover I've always seen attached looks masculine, and like Vethica says, Tracy can be a man's name.

Huh.

Thanks for teaching me something new, anon.

I literally listened to Fast Car on loop yesterday and thought that her voice was really androgynous.

I just googled her- I knew she was a woman but I wasn't aware she's black!

My friend once refused to believe Tracy Chapman was a woman until she'd looked it up on multiple different websites. She sounds like a woman to me, albeit somewhat androgynous. Then again, when I heard that song The Wire by HAIM, I thought it was sung by a man. Now that I know HAIM is a female group, I have no idea how I could have thought they sounded like men, but I did.

I don't know if anyone here besides me remembers a singer who was popular in the late '80s named Richard Marx. I heard his records before I knew his name and he sounded like a woman to me.

I know that artist :)! I usually saw video clips of him when I'd hear his songs, so I never had that issue, but now you've made me want to go listen to one of his songs and see if I can hear the "sounds like a woman" thing :p.
