Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I hate the first Captain America movie so much that I did not think I would like it at all.

I did like the first one. But I was surprised at just how much I loved Winter Soldier. It shot up to a place in my top 10 favorite movies. And since that list is mostly Star Wars and LOTR, that's impressive.

Man, I think this is true for nearly everyone who watched TWS. The first movie was so goddamn boring.

I was fairly meh on the first movie and the Avengers movie. This was the first Marvel movie that I thought was really fun and made me want to see what happened next.

I am apparently one of five people who liked the first Cap movie. :P

But TWS was so damn good and such a great sequel. It took Cap and really expanded on his character, gave Natasha a lot to do and gave us a great introduction to Sam. It's still my top Marvel movie.

I LOVE the first Cap movie. I adore well-done period pieces and I really like his origin story. plus he is just so Pure and earnest in his attempts to be the "good man" who stands up for the little guys that I really enjoyed a whole movie all about him. There aren't a whole lot of stories in the modern day that feature a largely morally-uncomplicated protagonist which manage to do it well, without making it a 2D caricature. I like morally complicated characters generally speaking but tbh it gets old having to deal with Discourse and Problematic-ness and Moral Gray Areas every damn time I want a story. And morally uncomplicated characters can be just as complex and interesting as the other kind...it just takes way more skill to make it work.

I'm just gonna nod my head here because yes, I get what you're saying and I agree tbh. Like I love Asshole(TM) characters but the sheer Goodness of Steve won me over so hard in the first movie that by the time TWS came out I was already solidly invested in seeing where he went in the modern day.

People can like what they want but it always makes me a little sad seeing people hate on Cap 1 so much, but oh well. We won't all like the same things.

DA

I completely agree with all of this. And in fact, I would list Cap 1 as a movie I ended up liking way more than I thought I would. I kind of figured I'd like TWS (and yup, I loved it) but I held off so long on watching either movie because I kept expecting Cap 1 to be annoyingly bland or something. And then it was actually really good.
