I've waited so long for this that I can hardly believe it's happening! But I wish it wasn't on Starz. Their whole cartoonish fake blood and CGI aesthetic just isn't right for the atmosphere of this story, in my opinion, especially that terrible Viking scene.

I didn't like the Viking thing, either. I've been enjoying the show, though, and the main cast is good.

Thank you for the transcript, 'cause I couldn't read what you wrote on the image at all.

I agree so much! Other than that it's really good, but every time the over-the-top violence shows up, it throws me right out of the story. :/

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hate some of the (side character) castings so I will probably never watch it even though I liked the books a lot.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Which ones?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
The Egyptian gods. I think Mr. Jacquel especially isn't a good choice because of his facial structure but I also wish they wouldn't have chosen black actors for them in general. (Mostly because because I'm tired of this trend of black Americans trying to portray Ancient Egypt as this is exclusively pitch black ancient wonderland and I'm annoyed that "diverse cast" usually means "pick black actors over other minority ethnicities. But hey, I'm mostly bitter about a lack of representation.)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to agree with you there. It feels like they're overcompensating for ancient Egyptians often being portrayed as white.

I can't say I've noticed, maybe I'm not just an effects snob.

/shrug

I don't know about Starz because American Gods is the only thing I've seen that airs on it. I just figured it was a Bryan Fuller thing because the aesthetic heavily reminds me of Hannibal.

So not liking tons of CGI and fake blood is being a snob now? Okay...

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. You know what they are representing, you completely understood that. You're complaining that the imagery isn't up to your precious standards, that is snobbery.

I loved episode 1 and 2 but felt a little put off by episode 3, and I think 4 was good at expanding on the book. I'm just curious how they'll mange this show and how many seasons it will end up being.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Personally episode 4 was the one that left me lukewarm. It felt out of place. Maybe I'm being unfair because the book is so dear to me, but I hope they don't stray from the source material for an entire episode again.

I agree with you that it did feel out of place and honestly I felt like it dragged on. Maybe if they had either cut it in half or split it over two episodes it would have felt better?

I'm curious how I'll react once they've finished the entire book and I rewatch the whole thing to see how it holds up in a binge watch.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
SA

It does drag on. I appreciate the attempt at giving Laura some depth, but I feel like we didn't gain much in that regard for an hour-long episode focusing on her. Not to mention both her and Shadow felt just a little off to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of glad because realistic-looking fake blood tends to make me nauseous, but yeah, it's pretty bad.

The blood and guts are 100% a Brian Fuller thing. I'm not super into the fake gore but I trust him with the rest of the story, it's a fair trade.

Gaiman does have a very violent view of the gods, but the show does go a bit far. It's like Hannibal turned up to 11 and it just gets dull to watch.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Blasphemy. All of it. I love this show. It is perfect. Laura did not deserve a whole episode and I hate her deeply.
