Actually it's funny because I didn't even go to the main island because my parents wanted to be where "less tourists" were but there were still a shit ton of tourists everywhere even on the smaller islands.

Kauai, then?

(just curious)

If Maui (I haven't visited that one yet), my understanding is that a lot of the "must-sees" are indeed crawling with tourists. Like Road to Hana or trying to see the sunrise on Haleakala. I guess I just have to remind myself when I go that they're so popular because they are pretty cool...but the crowds to tend to dampen the cool factor.

I live on Oahu and I've made it a point to seek out stuff to visit that has fewer tourists and more locals (and I've been to a couple beaches which are often practically deserted). Sure, there are cool things here that are busy but I wouldn't necessarily consider them 'tourist traps'. (like the USS Arizona memorial or Iolani Palace or Hanauma Bay)

The trick I've found with popular stuff is to try and figure out what the cruise line's schedule for visiting ports is and avoiding going to that stuff when the cruise tourists are going on their excursions, haha.

Both Maui and Kauai. I never went to Oahu and I was honestly kind of pissed about that because I'm more into museums then beaches so I kind of wanted to go to Oahu.

I definitely went to places with few people, but that was more the "seeing the pretty" part of the trip.

I just had a bad time on the trip in general though and that was partially to blame on my family, I might like it more if I visited now.

Yeah, who you're traveling with can definitely affect the experience.

If you decide to try coming back, check out the travel forum for Hawaii on trip advisor. There's a bunch of people there who actually live here (or have visited tons of times) that offer advice on what to see, how to make the most of whatever time you've got, and so on. I got some good help from them when I was making visits over to Kauai and the Big Island.

I went to Kauai with my BFF and I didn't really find it overly touristy at all? I mean, we did some touristy things (a luau and snorkling and stuff) but most of the time we just drove around and enjoyed nature and food.

We purposely went to Kauai and not one of the 'big' islands specifically so that it wasn't 'party' and 'touristy' and we were happy with out choice.
