I really liked the Big Island: Hilo felt very non-touristy to me and Volcanoes National Park was amazing (helps if you're into geology).

I loved seeing the lava at Kilauea but my best memory of the park was actually when we went to leave (after seeing it after sunset) and we turned off at the crater overlook so I could get out and look up at the night sky.

SO MANY STARS. I've never been somewhere without some level of light pollution so it was just...mind blowing. I may or may not have cried a little. I didn't want to leave (but it was cold and I didn't have a proper coat and even then I made my mom stay so I could crane my neck and look out through the car's windshield a while longer).

That reminds me: going to the summit of Mauna Kea was also amazing. I was there during the day, so no stars, but the Mars-like landscape is breathtaking - kind of literally, actually, since it's such high altitude!

My OMG STARS! moment came at Chaco Canyon. I was definitely more into the stars than the ruins. Chaco was actually my disappointment place, at least initially. I went there not too long after visiting Tikal and Chichen Itza, and the greathouses are just not on the same scale. I started to appreciate it more after hiking out to one of the outlying ruins and getting to go inside Pueblo Bonito, but initially everything just looked puny.

Yeah, we didn't have time/my mom didn't want to go up there so we didn't make it to Mauna Kea. But we spent a lot of time driving around the island and admiring the way the scenery changed: rolling, hilly pastures! lava fields! mountains! valleys and gulches! rainforest! OCEAN EVERYWHERE! and so on.

I also discovered that black sand beaches are SO MUCH BETTER than regular sand for one particular reason: the black sand doesn't stick the way regular sand does.
