Have fun.

Do the prequels exist to you? I don't mean that to be derisive or rude, but how do the prequels work for you, or is that just a random Jedi picked to be the chosen one called Tymr Roch-Loine or something?

ROCK-LOIN

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but I feel the exact same way and I ignore the prequels. I don't watch them, talk about them, or take them into account in any way. I expected to feel the same about TFA and RO but I loved TFA and RO was really good for what it was.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Either I'm having some serious deja vu, or I made this exact comment several weeks ago. Like, almost word for word...

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You did. I made it into a secret, hope you don't mind! ;)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank god I wasn't imagining it. It's actually pretty awesome, thanks! :D

High five anon, high five!

I feel the same way-- I realize that Anakin became Darth Vader through situations happening, but I never truly liked Anakin-- even though Darth Vader is my favorite character in the series.

I definitely feel ya!

Okay, ignorin the Prequels, that's fairly normal. But do you enjoy the "I am Your Father" thing and a good chunk of Return of the Jedi as well? And TFA with Kylo calling Vader his grandfather. That doesn't leave much Star Wars left to enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You can acknowledge those relationships Without acknowledging the story George Lucas told about them. Just take Obi Wan at his word in the OT and move on.

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-05-27 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I just don't see how you can enjoy Star Wars apart from at least the Luke as Vader's son bit. That is just so fundamental to what Star Wars is, even just the OT.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But there is so much more to Star Wars? I can see how someone can get a lot out of it with Vader remaining mysterious. A New Hope sold very well, obviously. Part of the fun was guessing what Vader must look like under the mask.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Wars fans went decades knowing Luke was Vader's son without knowing one whit about the prequels or any real details of Vader's origin story. I don't think you have wipe away what the OT tells us about Vader to ignore what the PT tells us about Anakin.

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-05-28 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
But they aren't saying just ignore the PT. They are seeing Vader as just a mysterious dark jedi with no Anakin or any knowledge of who Vader is at all. And that cuts out a lot more than just the PT. I get ignoring the prequels and saying that Vader was Anakin who was Luke's father but ignoring anything we know about him.

Yes, as someone who saw the films way back in the 1980s, I read the secret as preferring Vader's backstory to be ambiguous, but not dispensing with the I am Your Father and the name Anakin. The fanfic in that time period was fabulous. And the prequel was such a horrid disappointment, from midichlorians and virgin births onward. I feel the same way as OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've come around on Anakin. I didn't care for him in the prequels but I also didn't care that he was the pre-Vader because Vader isn't a huge selling point for me in Star Wars. I think the execution was terrible but having gotten deeper into some of the other Star Wars materials, I actually like the tragic quality they have going on. I like to think of the Anakin we knew and the Vader we get, and wonder what he's thinking about at any moment.

I think the biggest thing for me is actually how fans have responded to Kylo Ren. I've seen so much hate for him not being the badass that his appearance promised but it's clear he's not supposed to be that badass. And, I think what they're doing is interesting. The vitriol that I've seen has really turned me off the kind of villain these people want, and it bleeds into Vader. I don't want him to be just a big, scary villain. I like the added dimension that Anakin Skywalker is.

I've actually heard a lot more Anakin-hate since Kylo Ren was revealed than I ever heard before. (Not that it wasn't there. It's just coming up in conversation now.) I thought I'd heard all the prequel complaints, but I must've missed this one. It sounds like there are a lot of people who support your POV, OP.

I agree with all of this outside tge ending. I must be in a different corner of the fandom because everyone I follow who is into Star Wars LOVES Anakin. TCW helped a lot with that. That and Hayden's quiet resurgence back into Star Wars during Celebration.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, definitely! When I'm in the TCW or prequels-part of fandom, they love Anakin (sometimes to annoying degrees). It really depends on where you are. I mostly see the Anakin-hating part of fandom in the same place as the prequel-hating fandom, which is often on SW news sites. Since Kylo showed up, they've been very vocal about how they hate what the prequels did to Vader.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Come off it! Cartoon Anakin and Hayden are completely different characters and I'm sick of prequel fans trying to steal credit from Clone Wars. Confusing them is probably a tactic done on purpose.

Hayden looks miserable by the way, and only people stupid enough to defend prequels are his fans.

Yawn

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
But... Vader has been 'Dude what used to be Anakin Skywalker' since Empire Strikes Back. Have you seriously been in denial since the second freakin' movie?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I would imagine that the denial only began once the prequels fleshed out his backstory.

Not to mention you know. The fact that he's Anakin Skywalker is a pretty big plot point in Return of the Jedi so....

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
But the Anakin Skywalker of the Original Trilogy is just a NAME. I imagine it's the Prequel Anakin that OP dislikes.
