I think a lot of it isn't so much explicit disaproval as a "There but for the grace of God go I" reaction. If you're happily paired off with someone you love, it's hard to seperate imagining being single from imagining being without your love, and that makes being single seem awful. There are also people who are afraid of being single for a multitude of reasons and just get uncomfortable being reminded of the possibility they could remain single or be single again some day.
