Buy underclothing, socks, shoes, and sleep clothes new. Get everything else from a thrift store or yard sale. There is also local Facebook groups that sell stuff.

Seconding the "new undies, shoes, and sleepwear, seondhand everything else" comment. I grew up like this, still do it, and people often complement me on my clothes. I live in an area that has a lot of college students, so I think a lot of them dump their stuff at Goodwill or wherever. Sometimes if I know how a brand's clothes generally fit me, I will go on ebay and hunt for particular things I can't find at thrift stores.
