gardening question

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
How long do Dahlia tubers keep for? I found an old box of some dried up old tubers in a box at work that has been left since they stopped doing floral displays two years ago. If I plant them, will they still be good? I know dahlias are supposed to dry out and store, but will they still be good after all this time? Is it worth a try?

I think it might be worth a try if they've not rotted. Though, depending on the temperature and stuff they may not grow.

There is no mould or anything on them, and they aren't so dessicated that they crumble. The storeroom has always been pretty dry and temperature stable, if that helps. I think I'll try putting them in a pot and just see if anything happens.

You can try, but there's no way of telling for sure if they will work or not. Who knows how old they are for sure (could be older than 2 years)?

Yeah, two years minimum. We used to do floral displays but then the manager changed and they don't care about stuff like that. It is "outside the scope of the business's consumer model" whatever that bullshit means.

I dunno that they'll grow, dahlia tubers are, well, tubers. If they completely dry out I think they die, like potatoes or ginger. If they're still solid and not totally dessicated, maybe. Good luck.
