Re: Arguments that spun out of control

Honestly, every time I've seen someone talk about service animals they tend to fly off the hinges really easily. I'm sure you meant it in a polite way, but they tend to overreact. I've seen multiple people have a fit because an average joe doesn't understand that service animals are not to be pet or interacted with (a lot of people see a cute animal and think "Aww, I want to talk to him and pat him on the head!" without stopping and realizing that the animal is "on duty").

There are many people who try to pass off normal pets as service animals just to get them to be permitted into places. I do not mean emotional support animals, I mean regular pets with no training, poor behavior issues, etc. There is a lady who goes into our local Walmart with her mangy-looking dog (chihuahua-mix, it does not look healthy or like it's ever had a bath), she always tells people it's a service dog, but the entire time they're in the store, it will bark and growl at people, nonstop. The store cannot do a thing about it because of her claim, even though it is not wearing any kind of identification.

What you said was reasonable. I myself would be suspicious of a "service animal" if it did not have identification (even if it's easy to get vests/collars on eBay and just pass them off). As soon as I see a dog in a vest, being very attentive to its owner, I will assume it is a service dog and to leave them be unless the owner requests my help.

Actually the store could do something - legally you are allowed to ask service dogs to leave if they are being disruptive. That is something people with actual service animals know, and why they have socialization training.

Also you aren't allowed to ask "what is your disability" or "what do you need a service dog for" but you CAN ask "what task is your dog trained to perform?"

AYRT - Thanks! Yeah, it's an admittedly touchy issue and I probably should've stayed out of it.

The community also had a lot of social justice warriors at the time - it was pretty easy to walk into an argument. It's a bit better now, new mods eventually laid out some ground rules but it's also quieter, and I think the people who were there mostly to start fights left.
