Because FS is a community, not a blog. No one could participate in discussion anonymously and every comment would instead be a reblog. It would be a nightmare trying to keep track of conversations and FS would truly die.

same!! i've done some tumblr rps and it's hellish trying to keep track of everything. plus people get so worked up about how their blogs look like they don't do any real writing. plus the elitism.

which isn't to say every site doesn't have this, it's just particularly bad on tumblr

As someone who has RP'd on Twitter I do understand it - if two people are online at the same time, Twitter can be almost like an instant messaging system. Not exactly like it, but similar.
For people who want more long-form, there are Twitter apps that post large posts and create links to them on the user's Twitter account. I frequently used TwitLonger for RP.

Some do start new posts with a "continued from here", but it still seems a bit annoying.
