A dude didn't believe the wage gap existed so I showed him statistical evidence that it does and explained that it's not what it's often misunderstood as (being paid a lower amount for the same job by the same company) but actually a cumulative thing. He thanked me for the information and asked to share my explanation.

I think the key thing here is that I was polite, sympathetic, and I didn't immediately jump down his throat and start calling him a misogynist/MRA/meninist/whatever the insult du jour is for someone who doesn't share your views is.
