Conspiracy stuff used to be a lot more marginal, which meant that (one) it was a lot easier to trivialize and minimize and view as unthreatening and (two) it was much less strongly politicized and partisan and divided. It was sort of the discontents of all parties. So yeah, it's changed in those eays
