I played all the routes (you don't get the full story if you don't), and Koujaku was hands down my favorite of the boyfriends. Though Clear and Ren were absolute sweethearts, too.

I played them all, too, and Koujaku was not only the best boyfriend, he was the only boyfriend that was healthy and positive with Aoba. I mean, Noiz was kind of cute but still had all those willing-to-non-con vibes. Clear may have been sweet, but he's also a robot. Ren... was Aoba, or something. Koujaku was like the only normal boyfriend, and he also was just the fucking sweetest and sexiest.

AYRT: I just didn't find Koujaku that interesting, lmao. I've never really liked the childhood friend to lovers trope, and I just saw a lot of Koujaku in the fandom. I found his personality a little boring too. He struck me as a very generic pretty boy with angsty background, I didn't find it all that engaging. But Mink I thought was very complex and deep and I related to him a lot (the whole push-people-away-so-they're-not-hurt-when-you-die thing resonated me when I played the game). And, I feel like the rape storyline was handled very well and not glossed over like other BL games (and other routes in dmmd). Plus his route in re:connect was beautiful.

Fair enough. I don't usually like childhood friend lover tropes either, but I was more interested in Koujaku because he had been away for a long time and then come back, rather than a situation where they grew up together. I'd say all the boyfriends had angsty backstories, and while Koujaku was probably written to ping the more generic nice-boy fans, I thought he was pretty well-written and I liked his design. Plus, you really got a sense that he cared about Aoba and watched out for him, it felt pretty genuine to me - especially since it was a contrast to the other options.

I actually was interested in Mink's storyline, too, I just didn't like how Aoba so easily forgave him at the end, and ran off to find him in re:connect. But that didn't make Mink any less interesting, he was a solid character.
