the bullshit Freud created lives on well after him.

It's been awhile since psych 101, but I thought I remembered reading that the origins of Freud's Electra complex idea was that a lot of the young women he counseled mentioned having been molested by male relatives, and when he published his findings, a lot of the (rich, male) people who'd supported him flipped out and accused him of being vulgar and disgusting for making shit up (that would make a lot of them look bad if it was true.) So Freud changed his tune and said that men weren't really sleeping with their daughters and young female relatives, the girls just all really wanted it to happen, so he published new studies claiming they shared their fantasies, not their horrific reality.

AYRT--having done some cursory googling this morning, sort of? It was a theory that Freud later abandoned that was picked up in the 1970s by a social worker, Florence Rush, who was pushing the whole "repressed/recovered memories of abuse" bs.
