My nephew brought home a pair of sick, too-small-too-legally-sell red-eared sliders that his friend was "tired of." This was five years ago. Now we've got a pair of 50-gallon tanks (one of them was biting the other one so they couldn't be roommates anymore.)

That's how it goes! I love my turtle but I will always discourage people from owning one. I need assistance to move her (empty) tank, not just because it's too big for one person to lift, but it won't fit in my car. I need someone with a minivan. Those tanks can be very expensive, too, given the cost of transporting big, heavy glass things, although mine was pretty cheap since I happen to live in the same metro area as a tank manufacturer.
